A Biblical Description of Hell

In a day where so many ‘preachers’ either won’t preach on hell or even worse, will say that it does not exist, it is altogether necessary to lay down again the Bible’s teaching on hell and the afterlife of the unsaved. Some may claim that this is using fear tactics to gain converts. Jude tells us to save some by compassion and save others with fear, pulling them out of the fire (vs 22, 23). Fear of facing everlasting punishment as a consequence for your sins is a VERY GOOD REASON to repent and make Jesus Christ your Lord and Saviour. . .

Now on to the Scriptures. . .

Here is a true story about a man who died and went to hell,

contrasted with a man who went to heaven, told by the Lord Jesus Christ:

Luke 16

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Hell is real:

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt 10:28

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which AFTER he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him. Lk 12:5

Hell is a place of eternal fire:

Sodom and Gomorrah…are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Jude 7

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night… Rev 14:11

(Jesus speaking to unsaved people at final judgment), …Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Matt 25:41

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life…And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Rev 20:12, 15

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or feet to be cast into everlasting fire. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Matt 18:8,9

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcasses of the men that have transgressed [committed sin] against me[the Lord God]: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be abhorring unto all flesh. Isa 66:24

(speaking of hell, Jesus quotes Isa 66:24), Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. Mark 9:44

Hell is a place of everlasting punishment and destruction:

And these shall go away into EVERLASTING punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Matthew 25:46

Who shall be punished with EVERLASTING destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 Thess 1:9

The Son of man (Jesus) shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matt 13:41, 42

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matt 10:28

Who will be in hell?

The Son of man (Jesus) shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire. . . Matt 13:41, 42

But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Rev 21:8

9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind [ie, sodomites], 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor 6:9,10

Anyone who fits this description:

2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. 2 Tim 3:2-5

The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. Ps 9:17
